Agriculture students at Harrison High School learned this week about poultry science education paths and career opportunities from guest speaker Callie Selby. Ms. Selby, an account manager for DSM - a company focusing on animal nutrition and sustainable food practices - will complete her Ph.D. Poultry Science - Nutrition in December. She was invited to speak to students by HHS College and Career coach, Ashley Massengale.
Ms. Selby shared her journey and discussed the different career tracks available in the field of poultry science. These tracks included live production, sales, research, academics, nutrition, veterinary, field agents, marketing, graphic design, and more. Ms. Selby also encouraged students interested in this field, letting them know that many academic scholarships are available.
Ms. Selby also spoke with students about the soft skills and personality traits best suited for the poultry science industry, including interpersonal skills, manners, small talk, team player attitude, hospitality, work ethic, time management, and empathy. She spoke to the students about treating others with respect, because you never know when your paths will cross again. Mr. Skip Emmett, HHS Agri. teacher, reiterated her point stating, "Everybody you meet is important."
