Harrison High School students, along with students from other area schools, participated in a healthcare career exploration event today. The event, hosted by North Arkansas College, offered students considering a career in healthcare the valuable opportunity to learn much about various career possibilities in the industry.
Students began their day with a general orientation meeting in Northark’s John Paul Hammerschmidt Conference Center . To make the event enjoyable as well as informative, Northark hosts had assembled giveaway swag for students and even set up a fun photo booth related to health care. Following the general meeting, individual schools completed various tours and breakout sessions in different departments.
In the radiation technology department, Suzanne Woods, Radiologic Technology Program Director, spoke to students about potential opportunities in the field, which boasts an impressive 100% student employment rate upon program completion. Students learned about X-ray and CT imaging and saw many interesting and unique examples of actual patient images.
Northark’s nursing simulation center was next. In an environment designed to imitate a true clinical setting (hospital, medical clinic, hospice, etc.), this session allowed students to try their hand at checking a patient's blood pressure and pulse, as well as administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) successfully.
The surgical simulation room allowed students to perform actual simulated surgical procedures using different methods and approaches.
The trip to Northark was organized by HHS Career Coaches Ashley Massengale and Kelly Regan.
