Eight Harrison High School students (grades 9-12) participated in a unique event this week at the district’s professional development center. Each year, Arkansas’ own University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) hosts a “Find Your Future” virtual camp. Enrollment in the camp allows students to actively engage with current healthcare professionals through live virtual mini-workshop information sessions and various hands-on activities. All camp activities are organized to allow students considering a career in the medical field to explore opportunities and evaluate their level of interest.
Students interested in the program must complete a detailed application process - a valuable experience to prepare them for future application processes. UAMS then ships an activity kit of supplies to schools in preparation for the event.
Throughout the day, students:
role played responses to various medical situations (stroke, etc.),
Completed a hands-on activity regarding athletic training and sports injuries
Watched demonstrations of intubation procedures
Learned about the functions and parts of the eye, with each student dissecting a sheep’s eyeball provided by UAMS
Evaluated imaging through a sonography demonstration
Completed a respiratory therapy learning activity
Learned about the opportunities of various nursing roles and careers
The UAMS event was organized by HHS Career Coaches Ashley Massengale and Kelly Regan.
