Mr. Moore greets Skyline Heights students

Students at Skyline Heights Elementary have an extra special start to their school days, thanks to a remarkable community member, Mr. David Moore.

Mr. Moore, a retired machinist and a U.S. veteran, lives just down the street from the school. Several years ago (we think around 10), he approached Jeff Winkle (then the building principal) to discuss an idea. Mr. Moore wanted to volunteer to welcome students every morning that school year, greeting each one with a smile and a cheerful word to start off their day on a good note. After visiting with Mr. Moore for a bit, Mr. Winkle agreed. It worked out well, so the next fall, Mr. Winkle telephoned to ask if Mr. Moore would be interested in coming back for another year…then another…and another…

Now, all these years later, he is still at his post every morning at 7:25 - opening doors and greeting students with a bright smile and a quick, simple phrase such as “Happy Thursday!” before hurrying to the next car to assist the next family. Mr. Moore doesn’t stop there. Each day, he comes up with a new joke (he prefers one-liners!) to share with the kids, always striving to bring a smile to their faces.

Josh Magness (current building principal) says that even on rainy mornings, Mr. Moore is still promptly at his post - thoughtfully bringing an umbrella so that he can escort students and staff to the building.

Mr. Moore’s wife Eileen, a retired school teacher, also puts her talents to work supporting the school. She regularly delivers delicious baked goodies to the faculty workroom, for teachers and staff to enjoy (and they do!).

A smile, an act of kindness, or an encouraging word truly can make such a positive difference.

During this Thanksgiving holiday, Harrison Schools would like to ask you to help us say THANK YOU to Mr. and Mrs. Moore. Their kindness, generosity, dedication, and positive impact on so many are so very greatly appreciated.
