Students enrolled in the gifted and talented programs at Skyline Heights and Forest Heights elementaries are learning about electrical circuitry and more through teaching lessons and exploratory activities today. These lessons and activities are facilitated by Tiffany Brisco, a 2015 Goblin graduate, who returns to volunteer and give back to her community.
Tiffany is currently a student at UT Southeastern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, working on her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry. Last year, Harrison G/T students held a live Zoom with Tiffany where they made slime and exploding gummy bears! This year, Tiffany was able to visit the classes in person, facilitating today's activities with the help of her nieces - Harrison Middle School students Bentley Wood and Averi Wood.
GT students began the class learning about circuitry. They studied and tested conductors, insulators, and connectors, while learning the workings of basic electric circuits. An electric circuit is simply a path through which electricity flows. To work properly, a circuit must have a conductor (a material that electricity flows through easily). Play dough contains salt and water, which allows the dough to serve as the conductor.
The students then constructed unique and innovative LED Christmas light displays using the play dough to conduct electricity and a battery as a power source. Great job, students!
